1CalgaryCentre crowdsourcing initiative launched for forthcoming by-election

Initiative intends on connecting progressive voters in riding to select and elect a consensus candidate.

Calgary, AB – Today, 1CalgaryCentre was formally launched. The group’s aim is to mobilize the riding’s voters to select and support a consensus progressive candidate to elect as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Calgary Centre.

Based on analysis of previous elections and recent polls, an aggregation of the centre/centre-left parties would have meant a competitive progressive candidate in most federal elections. However, the fractured vote has led to the Conservative Party of Canada considering this a safe seat based on the historical trend.

With the belief a single consensus candidate can challenge newly nominated Conservative Party of Canada candidate, Joan Crockatt, 1CalgaryCentre was established to motivate progressive voters in the riding. Voters are encouraged to join our Facebook page (1CalgaryCentre), follow us on Twitter and register at our website and participate in the discussion with a goal to working collectively to select a candidate who can win the forthcoming by-election. At this point, 1CalgaryCentre is closing in on 100 “likes” at its Facebook group.

“This will effectively be a parallel campaign – not party-oriented, but mobilization focused,” says Brian F. Singh, one of the founders of 1CalgaryCentre. “We will serve as an ’engaged wedge’ between progressive parties and the electorate who want a single candidate and the opportunity to have progressive representation. This is an innovation in politics. We hope to evolve democracy by shifting the dialogue of election campaigning back to the voters and crowdsource their confidence to deliver on a progressive MP.”
